Kristin PhillipsFaculty Fellow
Kristin D. Phillips is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at Emory University, where her research and teaching currently focus on energy, poverty, and inequality in East Africa and the United States.
During her fellowship year, Phillips will draft a book manuscript, Light Bills & Storied Lives: Energy, Homes, and the Struggle for Justice in the Deep South, that tracks how utilities, racial capitalism, and the fight for energy justice bear on people’s lives in southwest Georgia. Through ethnography, oral history, visual methods, and archival research, Phillips’s project traces what energy means to precariously housed southerners; tracks how energy systems make and unmake homes; and follows the lives of those (still) struggling for energy justice, housing, and voting rights.
