FCHI Announces Keynote Lecture by Amitav Ghosh

3x2-amitav-ghosh

The Fox Center is excited to announce that our annual keynote event for our habitat theme year will be a lecture delivered by environmental thinker and acclaimed author Amitav Ghosh (Sea of Poppies, The Great Derangement: Climate Change and the Unthinkable, and The Nutmeg's Curse). This event, which is open to all and free to attend, will take place at Emory’s Performing Arts Studio on Thursday, November 19th at 7-8:30pm.

** Please note that due to high demand, the event time and venue have changed.

In “Habitats, Humanity and Apocalypse”, Amitav Ghosh will speak to the importance of literature and the humanities more broadly for understanding our current planetary predicament.

What does it mean to dwell in a ravaged world? Already in 1966, long before the ravages of the present planetary crisis had become manifest, Martin Heidegger said in an interview: ‘It is no longer upon an earth that man lives today… the uprooting of man that is now taking place is the end [of everything human…].’

This talk will ask whether it is indeed the case that human modes of habitation have ended, and if so, whether literature might be able to restore the possibility of dwelling meaningfully on the planet.

Doors will open at 6:30pm. A book signing will follow the lecture.

This event is co-sponsored by the Departments of English and Creative Writing, Environmental Sciences, History, Middle Eastern and South Asian Studies, the Emory Center for Ethics, the Emory Climate Hub, and the Global and Postcolonial Studies program.

This event is free and open to all, registration requested.
