Major Works Review Grants
The Fox Center offers Major Works Review Grants for Emory faculty in the humanities, arts, and humanistic social sciences. Major Works Review Grants are available to faculty as they prepare a book manuscript for publication or a major work of art for performance, screening, or exhibition. For those seeking editorial support, please see the CFDE's list of developmental editors who can be hired as freelancers and grants for hiring a developmental editor.
The external reviewer will provide a detailed “arms-length” review of the work, with constructive criticism and, where applicable, suggestions for placing the work with publishers or submitting it to venues for exhibition or performance. The Fox Center will provide a stipend of up to $1000 for the external reviewer, with the amount determined by the nature of the review requested.
Applicants should suggest 3-5 candidates to serve as external reviewers and provide both their academic bios and a brief rationale for the selection. Please also include any prior contact you have had with the proposed reviewer. Previous advisors, mentors, and PhD committee members are ineligible to serve as external reviewers.
For a full manuscript review, we typically allow three to four months for the completion of the review and the submission of a three-page report. Other major works may have a different review timeline. Where in-person review is required (i.e., for a performance or an exhibition), we have a modest budget for travel costs but ask that the applicant suggest external reviewers from the region.
This program is open to full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty in the humanities, arts, and humanistic social sciences. Preference will be given to tenure-track faculty who will engage an external reviewer no later than their third year.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the academic year.
