Karl-Mary AkreCommunications and Outreach Coordinator

Hi there! I'm Karl-Mary, the Communications and Outreach Coordinator for the Fox Center. I create and manage communications strategy for our various programs, events, and initiatives, including the seasonal newsletter, social media, and website updates. Additionally, I assist with the Mellon-funded Digital Publishing in the Humanities initiative and organize public programs connecting scholars to the Atlanta community. I also help edit the Open Books podcast.

Before joining the Fox Center team, I received my MFA in Screenwriting from the Michener Center for Writers at the University of Texas at Austin. I also hold a BA in English and Film from Barnard College where I served as a Media Specialist. My writing centers Blackness within horror, sci-fi, and mystery, exploring themes of identity, isolation, and independence. My work has been supported by the James A. Michener Fellowship and my writing debut “HAIR CARE” won the 2024 SXSW Special Jury Award.

Passionate about both art and humanities scholarship, I look forward to amplifying the Fox Center’s presence near and abroad, and welcoming newcomers to engage with our work.
