Mae Velloso-LyonsAssociate Director

In my role as Associate Director of the Fox Center, I work closely with Director Carla Freeman to develop engaging and meaningful programs for our residential research fellows, for Emory's faculty and students across the humanities, and for our broader Atlanta community. I also manage the Mellon-funded Digital Publishing in the Humanities initiative, which seeks to amplify new humanistic research through open access and digital innovation in publishing.

I received my BA in Modern and Medieval Languages from the University of Oxford, my MA in Medieval and Renaissance Studies from University College London, and my PhD in Comparative Literature from Stanford University. My doctoral research explored character forms and the bodily imaginary in later medieval fiction, using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods to demonstrate the embodied nature of emergent character complexity in a formative period for Western narrative. This research was supported by fellowships at Stanford Data Science and the École normale supérieure in Paris, France. I joined the Fox Center in 2023 following roles at Stanford University’s Center for Spatial and Textual Analysis (CESTA) and on numerous digital humanities projects, including the Global Medieval Sourcebook and A World Made by Travel.

I am excited to contribute to a new chapter at the Fox Center as we work to build our profile and connect with new audiences while preserving what has rightly made this a beloved institution for so many.
