Alex MinoviciUndergraduate Humanities Honors Fellow
Alex Minovici is a senior majoring in History and Philosophy, Politics, & Law.
Her thesis explores how modern political engagement in democratic Romania is influenced by the memory of the 1989 Revolution, which led to the violent overthrow of Nicolae Ceaușescu’s authoritarian communist regime. She is interested in examining the post-socialist disillusionment arising from the gap between revolutionary hopes and the political realities that emerged during Romania’s democratic transition. Her research focuses on how people have become disengaged from the political landscape while also considering the various popular mobilization efforts demanding national change. Specifically, Alex aims to highlight the lived experiences of ordinary Romanians, conveying their personal truths and emphasizing that perceptions often hold more significance than reality.Alex’s research is supported by the George P. Cuttino Scholarship for Independent Research Abroad, enabling her to travel to Romanian archives in Bucharest and Timișoara and engage with people who experienced the revolution.
